Stifterverband and Deutsche Telekom Stiftung appointed as new members of Global Learning Council
As a cross-sector group of thought leaders engaged in using and developing technology to enhance learning outcomes, the Global Learning Council (GLC) relies on the expertise, dedication and commitment of its members to the joint mission of fostering successful learning on a global scale. The GLC brings together leaders from the global academic, industrial and non-profit sectors.
At the beginning of 2018, Volker Meyer-Guckel, Deputy Secretary General of the Stifterverband, and Wolfgang Schuster, Chairman of Deutsche Telekom Stiftung, joined the GLC.
“I am delighted to welcome to the GLC two of the most important German foundations which contribute to the expansion of the GLC’s global network of thought leaders on digital learning,” says Matthias Kleiner, Chair of the GLC and President of the Leibniz Association. “Both organizations already did tremendous work in co-organizing the GLC summit 2017, hosted by the Leibniz Association.”
The Stifterverband is a joint initiative, rich in tradition and forward-thinking, started by companies and foundations, with the aim of being devoted entirely to consulting, networking and to promoting improvements in the fields of education, science and innovation.
“The biggest challenge for our educational institutions worldwide is to shape the digital future and not just to react to it,” says Volker Meyer-Guckel. “I am proud to be able to join the Global Learning Council, where people and organizations with highly diverse backgrounds work on this issue together.”
Wolfgang Schuster, Chairman of Deutsche Telekom Stiftung, stresses the impact of the GLC’s global network: “It will promote new ways of learning and contribute to better solutions in education, affordable for everybody. The GLC can promote life-long learning through an intensive exchange of ideas and experience and can serve as an interdisciplinary platform for educational policies.”
The Deutsche Telekom Stiftung is one of the main corporate foundations in Germany, established to improve education in the digital world. It concentrates on the subjects of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).
“One focus of the GLC’s work in the upcoming years will be to throw the spotlight on the challenges of digital teaching and learning for developing countries. The next summit of the GLC will take place on the African continent in 2019,” says Friedrich W. Hesse, the Leibniz Association’s Vice-President and new scientific Co-Chair of the GLC. “The rapid development of digital technologies, which are scaleable and affordable, puts even developing countries in a position to provide every person with access to global knowledge at any time, while leapfrogging certain steps in innovation processes.”

The Leibniz Association
The Leibniz Association connects 93 independent research institutions that range in focus from the natural, engineering and environmental sciences via economics, spatial and social sciences to the humanities. Leibniz Institutes address issues of social, economic and ecological relevance. They conduct knowledge-driven and applied basic research, maintain scientific infrastructure and provide research-based services.
The Leibniz Association identifies focus areas for knowledge transfer to policy-makers, academia, business and the public. Leibniz institutions collaborate intensively with universities – in the form of “Leibniz ScienceCampi” (thematic partnerships between university and non-university research institutes), for example – as well as with industry and other partners at home and abroad.
They are subject to an independent evaluation procedure that is unparalleled in its transparency. Due to the importance of the institutions for the country as a whole, they are funded jointly by the Federation and the Länder, employing some 18,700 individuals, including 9,500 researchers. The entire budget of all the institutes is approximately 1.8 billion Euros.
