You are cordially invited to a live press briefing by the Genome 10,000 consortium (G10K), which will announce the official launch of the international Vertebrate Genomes Project (VGP; www.vertebrategenomesproject.org, password: 2SequenceAllLife# before going public on Sep 13th) and the release of its first new 14 high quality reference genomes for species representing all five vertebrate classes: mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and fish. The mission of the VGP is to provide high quality, near error-free, and complete genome assemblies of all 66,000 vertebrate species on Earth to address fundamental questions in biology, conservation, and disease. Phase 1 of the project aims to create reference assemblies of select species representing all vertebrate orders that evolved since the last mass extinction event that killed off dinosaurs 66 million years ago.
All information released during the press briefing, including the press release, will remain under embargo until the next day at 8:00 a.m. U.S. EST, Thursday, 13 September 2018. Journalists attending the press briefing will receive a copy of the full press release under embargo at registration on 9:30 a.m. U.S. EST.

The Q&A session during the press briefing will also include the following additional panelists (Federica Di Palma, G10K Council, Director Earlham Institute for Genomics, UK; Paul Flicek, ENSEMBL genome database director, Genome Annotation, Cambridge, UK; and Arang Rhie, Genome Assembler, NIH, USA) as well as other G10K consortium and technology partners in the audience.
Following the press briefing, one-on-one interviews can be scheduled with any of the panelists and additional G10K consortium members and technology partners from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 pm (list of available interviewees below).
